Terms of Use

By using Writeoff you agree to these terms.

What Writeoff is

A record-keeping tool. It records the miles you drive, the money you earn and the money you spend, and it arranges those records into totals and reports you can give to whoever prepares your taxes.

What Writeoff is not

Writeoff is not tax advice, and it is not a tax preparer.

The app performs arithmetic on figures you provide, using published rates. It does not know your filing status, your household's other income, your deductions, your credits or your state's rules, and it cannot know whether a particular expense is deductible in your situation.

Your records are your responsibility

The app records what you tell it and what your device's sensors report. You are responsible for checking that its records are accurate and complete before relying on them.

Mileage is measured using your phone's location hardware. Accuracy depends on your device, the weather, and where you are driving; tunnels, dense cities and underground car parks all degrade it. The app filters out readings it can identify as implausible, but it cannot guarantee that every mile is captured or that every captured mile is correct. Review your mileage records.

Text read from a photograph is a machine's best reading of an image. The app marks fields it is unsure about rather than guessing, but a confident reading can still be wrong. Check the figures against the paper.

Availability

The app runs on your device and does not depend on a server, so it keeps working without a connection. It is provided as-is. There is no guarantee that it will be free of defects, and features may change between versions.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the developer is not liable for any loss arising from your use of the app, including any tax, penalty, interest or professional fee resulting from records that were inaccurate, incomplete or missing.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of add your state, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the date at the top changes with them, and the app will show you the new version before you continue using it.

This document is a working draft. The limitation of liability and the governing-law clause are jurisdiction-specific and are the parts a template most often gets wrong — have both reviewed by a lawyer before the app is published.
